Mary McCarley is a 9th grade health teacher at Myers Park High School. In addition, she teaches an all girls nutrition and fitness class. As a pilot program, the YMCA sponsored a class to nationally certify the girls in Healthy Lifestyle Principles, Foundations of Group Exercise, and Cardio and Step Instruction. With these girls as her inspiration, McCarley started the Staff Best Life Challenge at Myers Park. Sixty-three teachers signed up for the three month wellness program and committed to eating healthy and daily exercise. Weight, Body Mass Index, waist circumference, body fat percentage, and blood pressure were initially measured and re-measured monthly. Three to five days a week, McCarley leads cardio and weight workouts after school for the staff members. In addition, she organizes YMCA instructors to lead Zumba, Cardio Funk, Step, Hip Hop Hustle or Yoga on a weekly basis. The Challenge, which ends the first week of June, will produce a male, female, and team winner based on their change in measurements. This summer, McCarley plans on organizing a fitness, nutrition, and self-esteem program for inactive teens in the local churches.

June 30, 2008 - 10:08 pmMary, we missed you at my mom's party, (it was great to see your mom and sister!) but it is amazing to be able to see the real you as a hero and role model for so many young women. You must be quite an inspiration! In the pictures I can see your little girl face (the one I remember) but also a lot of your mom in the women you've become. You could hope to do no better. She too is an amazing woman. I hope that we can get our families together again soon so that we can reconnect and get to know each other. Your cousin, Deb

June 5, 2008 - 2:42 amMary has been my hero since the day I met her 5 years ago and I aspire to follow her example as a leader and a role model. Her passion, enthusiasm, and dedication are contagious and she has truly been the one of the most influential people in my life. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to be one of the many lives she has changed for the better. There are no words to describe how incredible she really is and I'm so glad she is finally getting the recognition she deserves for all her efforts over the years. I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for her as I'm sure she will continue to touch many more lives and make the world a better place. Thanks coach!
